Julia VanRooyen, MD

Fellow, Harvard Humanitarian Initiative

Julia VanRooyen, MD, F.A.C.O.G., is a Fellow at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. Dr. VanRooyen is a gynecologic surgeon, with subspecialty training in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. She trained in gynecology and obstetrics at Northwestern University in Chicago, and completed her urogynecology training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She worked as a member of the gynecology faculty at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. VanRooyen has worked in several international settings. While at Johns Hopkins, she developed training programs in reproductive health in Azerbaijan. Other international experience includes work in Somalia, Kenya, and Russia.

During her residency training, Dr. VanRooyen completed a special elective working with the Indian Health Service with the Navajo tribe in Fort Defiance, Arizona.

Dr. VanRooyen's current interests are in gender-based violence and the medical, surgical and psychological complications of rape and sexual abuse.
